CO2 Laser

This treatment is recommended for moderate to severe wrinkles, sun damage and severe acne scars. It is also quite effective in minimizing scars due to surgery or accidents. The CO2 laser goes deeper, to address the dermis (the dense inner layer of skin beneath the epidermis or skin’s surface). CO2 laser uses fractional technology, which enhances rapid healing. The dermis is stimulated to pour out collagen in a healing response to the laser beams. As a result of this healing response, skin tightens and thickens, collagen production increases, and a general overall rejuvenation is achieved.

Treatments with the CO2 laser will enhance your skin’s strength and elasticity. The skin will have a smoother, tighter texture and pigmentation problems will begin to diminish.

You will need to follow specific skin care instructions after this treatment, there will be some downtime. The skin heals within a month, although redness can persist for two to three months. Once you have fully healed you will notice a significant improvement in; fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity and discoloration. Call for an appointment, let us analyze your skin and choose a customized treatment program that is just right for you.

CO2 Micro Laser

This treatment utilizes our top of the line Fractionated CO2 laser but offers a lower intensity treatment for those that don’t have the time to commit to a full week of skin healing. Utilizing micro settings, the CO2 laser resurfaces the outer layer of the skin while helping tighten and stimulate collagen.

The results are a refreshed glow, improved skin quality, and reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. The micro-laser treatment takes on average 2-3 days to heal. We recommend a series of 3 treatments at 1-month interval.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

A light-based treatment offered by our practice using the Palomar StarLux System. The light penetrates deep into the dermis to treat veins, excessive pigmentation, redness, brown spots and acne by using different wavelengths.

An IPL treatment can clear pigmented and vascular lesions.  Several days after the treatment, the pigmented areas will rise to the surface and flake off (freckles look tan for 3-5 days). The redness will gradually resolve within a couple of weeks.

After several treatments, brown spots, redness, large pores, dull skin, melasma and acne are minimized greatly. IPL may take more than one treatment; packages are available. This procedure provides great results with no down time.

threeforme

Say goodbye to tired, dull skin—and hello to a brighter, younger-looking you!

We are happy to announce that we will soon be offering threeforme Laser Treatments, with our newest laser, starting on September 15th! The threeforme treatment can address three common skin concerns – wrinkles, brown spots and redness – all within one procedure! The procedure is only 45 minutes giving you the best results possible while still fitting within your busy schedule.

How it works:

The light penetrates deep into the dermis to treat veins, excessive pigmentation, redness, brown spots and acne by using different wavelengths.

The procedure is performed in two steps:

  1. The first step will use an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to treat discoloration for a more even-looking appearance. This includes sun-damage such as freckles, brown spots, or age spots. This pass also addresses unwanted facial veins including broken blood vessels, spider veins and rosacea.
  2. The second step will use a “microbeam” laser technology that will gently renew the skin for a smoother-looking appearance. This unique technology works by stimulating new collagen and elastin production – the keys to the support structure of our skin. Improved skin structure results in the reduction of fine lines, wrinkles, scars and crepey skin.

What to Expect:

This procedure provides great results with no down time.

During threeforme laser treatments most people feel only minimal discomfort. Your physician may use comforting techniques such as a topical numbing cream or cool gel packs to further enhance your experience. After the treatment, you may experience some minor redness and swelling similar to a slight sunburn. This should resolve in just a couple days but you can wear makeup to conceal any redness.

You will see continued improvement in the skin’s appearance during and after a course of 1-3 treatments with visible results after each individual treatment. You may see results in facial veins immediately after the treatment along with a darkening of the brown spots. These spots will flake off over the next one to three weeks leaving you with a glowing appearance. Lastly, you will see progressive results on any fine lines, wrinkles or scarring over the next six months as your skin naturally responds to the treatment.

After several treatments, brown spots, redness, large pores, dull skin, melasma and acne are minimized greatly.

threeforme laser treatments can be safely used on most skin types and for common aging and sun-related skin conditions including wrinkles, sun spots and facial vessels. During your consultation, your provider will determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure based on a variety of personal factors.

A typical course of treatment involves 1-3 procedures at one-month intervals. However, everyone’s skin conditions are different so your physician will customize the treatment for optimal results on your skin. They will discuss your specific treatment plan during your consultation.

During threeforme treatments most people feel only minimal discomfort. During the treatment you may feel some mild cooling as the laser is guided over the treatment area along with a slight sensation similar to the snapping of a rubber band. After the treatment, you may experience some minor redness and swelling similar to a mild sunburn for a couple days.

Typically, you can resume regular daily activities the same day as your treatment although due to some redness and swelling you may experience a day or two of “social downtime”.

threeforme laser treatments are clinically proven to be safe and effective.

Fractionated Light (FL)

One of the most powerful and effective treatments available today. It delivers high precision micro beams of light into the skin that stimulates the body’s natural healing response, causing new healthy tissue to grow.  The result is a smoother, more even toned complexion, stimulation of collagen, thickening and tightening of the skin over a series of treatments, minimizing lines, wrinkles and “crepy skin.”

Fractionated light treatments deliver great results with minimal redness and discomfort, allowing patients to return to daily activities almost immediately. Results often begin to appear within several days and improvements continue for six months and beyond.

Fractionated light takes more than one treatment, packages are available. See how a Fractionated Light treatment compares with our other laser treatment options.

Things to Know

  • Resurfaces lines, wrinkles and scars
  • Evens skin tone and texture
  • Stimulates collagen production
  • Minimal downtime
  • Redness and minimal swelling may occur for 24 to 48 hours
  • Sun protection is highly recommended during treatment
  • A series of treatments may be required for women over 40 years for improvement of damage, younger women will be recommended once yearly treatment for prevention and early reversal of damage.

Laser Hair Removal

Traditional hair removal routines can be tedious, painful, expensive, and time consuming. Here at Dr. Monica Scheel Dermatology  we can offer you another option: laser hair removal with the Cynosure Vectus® Laser- the world’s fastest laser treatment for laser hair removal!

About Laser Hair Removal

Unwanted hair is a common problem, for both men and women. Frequent hair removal tasks including shaving, depilatories, plucking, and waxing can be time-consuming, inconvenient and often painful. At best, these methods offer only temporary results – for some only a few hours.

Free yourself from the constant need to shave and wax unwanted facial and body hair and feel your best. Laser technology has brought us a permanent solution to remove unwanted hair, leaving skin feeling smooth and healthy.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, laser hair removal is the 3rd most performed non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the US1. We can help you to get to the root of the problem with our state-of-the-art Vectus® Laser system.

Laser hair removal gives you effective, permanent hair reduction anywhere on your body including the face, legs, back, underarms or bikini line. Treatments are quick and easy letting you get back to your everyday activities.

How It Works

To understand how laser hair removal works, it’s helpful to understand how your hair grows. Below is an overview and how a laser is uniquely able to permanently reduce unwanted hair.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

During laser hair removal, a laser device emits light energy that travels through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and hair shaft. Pigments are the substances that give skin and hair its color. This energy damages the hair follicle, which impairs its ability to grow.

Hair follicles that are in the anagen, or active growth phase, have more pigment and absorb more energy, and typically respond best to treatments. For this reason, it takes multiple treatments to achieve the best results – it’s important to “catch” your hair in this active growth phase when you are receiving treatments.

Laser Hair Removal Procedure

During the procedure, the provider will guide the device over the treatment area. The Vectus® Laser will emit gentle pulses of energy that are delivered into your skin and hair follicles.

The hair follicles that absorb the energy from the laser will be damaged. Hairs that were present in the follicles at the time of treatment will fall out over the next couple of weeks and future hair growth will be impaired.

Since not all hairs are actively growing at the same time, a single procedure will not treat all of the hair follicles in the area. As the follicles in the transitional and resting periods return to the active growth phase, you may notice some hair regrowth but not as thick as it was before the treatment. This regrowth will become thinner and lighter with each subsequent treatment until there is little, to no hair at all.

What To Expect On The Day Of Treatment

We suggest shaving prior to your consultation and minimizing sun exposure if you would like to get started the same day as your consultation. Typically, there is little to no down time after laser hair removal treatments and is so quick and easy patients can come on their lunch breaks.

Before the laser is used, a gel is applied to your skin where you will receive treatment. The treatment will begin with the provider guiding the Vectus® Laser handpiece over the treatment area. You will feel cooling while the handpiece is gliding over the treatment area to provide a comfortable session. You may also feel a slight rubber-band like snapping when the energy is being delivered into your skin and hair follicles. The discomfort is over almost immediately, and treatments take just a few minutes depending on the size of the area.

After the treatment, the gel will be removed and a cooling gel may be applied to your skin. Bandages and ointments are not necessary after laser hair removal due to the nature of the treatments being so minimally invasive. For a few days after your treatment, you may feel like you have a mild sunburn but can resume all your normal day to day activities immediately following treatment.

If you are a laser hair removal patient, please be aware of the following:

 Shave the area being treated prior to your appointment.

 Discontinue all waxing, plucking, and tweezing on the areas receiving treatment 6 weeks before and during your sessions.

 Discontinue excessive UV exposure, tanning and tanning beds and tanning creams on the areas receiving treatment, 4 weeks prior to your appointment.

Post Treatment Instructions For Laser Hair Removal

 Immediately after the treatment, there may be redness around the treatment site, which may last up to a couple days but usually subsides within the first few hours. It is normal for the treated area to feel like a mild sunburn for the first few days.

 Avoid sun exposure on the treated area and use a sunscreen SPF 45 or greater at all times throughout the course of treatment.

 Anywhere from 7-30 days after treatment, shedding of the hair may occur and this may appear as new hair growth. This is not all new hair growth, but mostly dead hair pushing its way out of the follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What areas can laser hair removal treat?

The Vectus® Laser can remove hair from many areas including the face, back, chest, arm, underarm, bikini, and legs.

Am I a good candidate for laser hair removal?

The Vectus® Laser can be safely used on all skin types from very light skin to very dark skin. It is best if the hair is black or brown, however, your provider will determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure based on a variety of factors.

Can the laser get rid of all of my unwanted hair?

Since our hair grows in different phases it’s not possible for any laser treatment to achieve 100% hair removal, but it is possible to significantly reduce the number of growing hairs by as much as 85%. Multiple treatments can be administered for maximum results.

Is hair removal permanent?

Hair removal is permanent. Hair follicles in the anagen phase, or growth phase, are targeted by the laser. After treatment, those follicles are permanently unable to produce new hairs, or can produce only very thin, tiny hairs that are virtually invisible.

Can anyone have this treatment?

Laser hair removal is effective on individuals with dark hair anywhere on their face or body. Individuals with very light or gray hair are not ideal candidates. Any skin color can be treated, as the laser is effective on light and dark skin types. Speak with one of our provider to discuss if you are a good candidate.

What does the treatment feel like?

Most people feel only a slight “snap” like a rubber band at the treatment site during the procedure. You will also feel cooling on your skin as the handpiece guides over the treatment area.

How many treatments will I need?

Since your hair grows in three stages, several treatments are needed to affect all of the unwanted hair. The number of treatments can vary between individuals, depending on the amount of hair, the area to be treated, skin color, hair color and hair coarseness.

Typically 4 – 6 treatments are needed but this will depend on a number of factors. One of our providers can give you a more specific treatment plan during your consultation.

How far apart are treatment sessions?

It depends on which area is getting treated. In general, face, underarms, arms, and bikini are approximately 4-6 weeks apart. Back, chest, and legs are approximately 8-10 weeks apart.

How much does the treatment cost?

Treatment costs vary depending on the size of the area to be treated.

How does the laser work?

The laser emits powerful light energy that targets and heats hair follicles. After treatment, the follicles are permanently unable to produce new hairs, or can produce only very thin, tiny hairs that are virtually invisible.

Can I shave in between laser hair removal sessions?

Yes. In fact, the area needs to be freshly shaved before your treatment session. However, you should not wax or pluck the hair between treatment sessions.

How quickly will I recover?

You can resume regular daily activities immediately following treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Typically, most people experience a mild, sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor redness and/or swelling immediately following the treatment. This usually lasts 2-24 hours. We will discuss any other possible side effects and the necessary post-treatment care with you during the consultation.

Tattoo Removal

Ready to lose your tattoo? Do it better and faster with PicoSure

PicoSure is the world’s first picosecond laser and the only advanced tattoo removal laser with PressureWave technology, which works with your body to remove unwanted ink. PicoSure delivers laser energy that specifically targets tattoo ink, resulting in the successful shattering of just the ink particles without harming the surrounding tissue.

PicoSure works effectively on:

  • Multicolored tattoos, including blues and greens
  • Hard-to-remove black ink
  • Stubborn, previously treated tattoos

Best of all, PicoSure tattoo removal often requires fewer treatments than traditional laser tattoo removal.

How does it work?

Lasers do not remove tattoos, your body does. Naturally. Let PicoSure help.

During treatments with PicoSure, PressureWave technology is used to deliver ultra-short pulses of specialized energy to targeted ink particles.

These pulses are so rapid they cause a change in pressure that breaks ink apart into tiny dust-like particles. These tiny particles are then absorbed by the lymphatic system, a critical part of your body’s immune system, and eliminated naturally.

What should I expect?

Treatments for an average sized tattoo typically take about 10 minutes, but larger or more complex tattoos can take longer.

Laser tattoo removal has been described as feeling similar to the actual tattooing process. PicoSure relies on pressure changes instead of just heat to break apart ink particles but some patients may feel some discomfort. Your treatment provider should be able to provide aids to make your experience more comfortable.

  • Number of treatments needed is dependent on variables such as ink characteristics, size of tattoo,
location on body, and lifestyle habits
  • Treatments typically occur every 6-8 weeks and your treatment provider will develop a treatment plan to meet your individual needs.

Patients and treatment providers have reported better clearance (disappearance) of tattoos with improved recovery time. You can expect excellent results with PicoSure.

From Our Patients

When I walk into Dr. Scheel’s office, I know I will be well taken care of. It’s the best of both worlds: a spa-like feeling met with the highest medical standards and care. I’ve been coming here for years to get HydraFacials, IPLs, and chemical peels. This is also the only place I go to for sunscreen and skin care products. I love Monica’s personal line she created in the last several years and would highly recommend it. What I especially love about this office is their attention to detail and the personalized experience I always receive. When I became pregnant with my son, they tailored my treatments to make sure that both me and my baby-on-the-way were safe the entire time.

I came to Dr. Scheel’s office with a lot of sun damage accumulated over the years having lived in sunny climates most of my life. After just one IPL session, almost all the brown spots on my face disappeared. I was so happy with the results that I dared to try something I didn’t think I’d ever do … botox & fillers. Bye bye wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes, hello plumper lips! I’m totally sold on these treatments and highly recommend Dr. Scheel and her staff if you have any skin-related concerns, cosmetic or medical. In fact, next time I’m going in for a skin exam because one of the PAs who gave me a peel recently noticed some spots on my arm that might be of concern. I love that they are not only focused on the cosmetic side of things but also on the lookout for medical issues that I may not have noticed. That’s genuine care of their patients!

I am very pleased with the first IPL and how Pam worked with me on it. The other IPL I had elsewhere was really NOTHING like this one – which was just a few spots were hit, and it produced no visible results – waste of money after two visits – it was a GROUPON – nothing I’d do again. This IPL really made a big difference. I know those brown spots on my cheeks and one near my mouth were very predominant – and they looked so horrible. Now, I can barely see them. And, overall, less spots. And, it’s just the first IPL!

Before I began working with Dr. Monica Scheel in 2005, I was a former Southern California beach lifeguard, a lifelong swimmer and a bonafide sun worshiper. After consulting with Monica, I realized my skin was not “too far gone,” as I believed, and that she could help. Between better sun awareness, the use of hat and sunscreen and more protective clothing (sleeves), avoiding peak sun hours and finding shade as well as IPL’s, PDT and laser treatment from Monica, I have lost the “fried” look. My skin appears and feels ten years younger. I don’t need to look 35, I just want to be a dam good 50! Thanks, Monica, for saving me!
