Over the course of four days, October 7-10th, more than 40 volunteers screened 400+ people at the IRONMAN® World Championship’s IRONMAN® Village thanks to Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) and Dr. Monica Scheel’s Free Skin Cancer Screening.
Each year Dr. Monica Scheel hosts a volunteer training on Monday night prior to the screening where volunteers are trained on how to use the AAD (American Academy of Dermatology) Skin Cancer Screening form as well as learn the importance of using and reapplying sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher daily, the ABCDE’s of skin cancer and what their roles will be at the screening. Volunteers received training, enjoyed some pizza and, as a thank you, received a free DermaSweep treatment in our office.
A few statistics from the screening on what was found:
Pre-cancers/Actinic Keratoses (AKs) 76
Basal Cell Carcinomas 44
Squamous Cell Carcinomas 7
Pre-melanomas 38
Melanomas 7
