2016 Keiki Surf Classic

surf classicWhat a great day at the 21st annual Keiki Surf Classic at Banyans! This event, organized by pro surfer Shane Dorian, is the so-called “The Eddie for Groms” or “The Eddie Aikau of kids contest.” Forty-something years ago as a kid, Shane first ventured out into the lineup at Banyans. At the time, he had no idea that he would ever grow up to be one of the most influential big wave surfers of our era and, arguably, the best big wave surfer of all time. Despite all of his success, his humble beginning and deep Big Island roots keep him grounded. Shane’s event teaches kids moral values, confidence, and a sense of community and has a huge focus on good grades and scholarships. Our Physician Assistant Patricia Achay is a surfer herself and saw an opportunity to help surf classic attendees be more sun safe while enjoying their day. She and two other staff members from our office set up a booth at the surfing event to offer free skin cancer spot checks, free skin cancer education, free sunscreen and, for the keiki, free shave ice for those who applied or reapplied their sunscreen.Tricia and her assistant Gia screened about 40 people and even got to do a skin check on famous pro surfer Jamie O’Brien! They talked about skin cancer education with dozens more in the community and patient care coordinator Erica did a great job with educating and ensuring all the keiki were applying and re-applying their sunscreen. To reward them, Tricia’s husband Logan manned the shave ice machine and ended up making over 300 shave ice! The community was so appreciative of us being there that we ended up staying for considerably longer than expected, but it was well worth our time. Mahalo to Dr. Scheel for sponsoring this wonderful event and to all who stopped by our booth to see us!
