Why I Tried PRP for Postpartum Hair Loss

When I returned to work three months after having my baby, I felt pretty pleased with myself. I was sleeping (kind of), I was back in a routine, and my hair still looked full and shiny. I thought I had dodged the dreaded postpartum shedding that many pregnant people and new mothers often fear, as hair has become a stylistic staple for our confidence in appearance.

Spoiler: I had not.

At four months postpartum, my temples thinned dramatically. We’re talking visible bald spots. I panicked. I tried to talk myself down: “This is normal, it will grow back.” But the truth was, it didn’t feel like normal shedding. It felt like a lot.

Enter: PA Victoria.

If you’ve met her, you know she’s incredibly smart and an outstanding dermatology provider. She’s also calm, thoughtful, and knowledgable. When I told her what was going on, she immediately recommended PRP scalp injections.

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. It’s a regenerative treatment that uses your own blood’s healing properties to stimulate growth and repair tissue. It’s been used for years in orthopedic medicine and aesthetics, and now it’s a popular option for hair loss—particularly androgenetic alopecia (aka male or female pattern hair loss).

Victoria drew my blood and spun it in a centrifuge for about 30 minutes to separate out the platelets. While that was happening, I sat with numbing cream on my scalp (though in hindsight, I’d probably skip the numbing—the injections were fast and tolerable, and the cream only left a mess in my hair). Once the PRP was ready, she injected it into my temples and along my hairline. The whole thing took maybe four minutes.

I also started taking Nutrafol Postpartum supplements. Between the PRP and the Nutrafol, my hair is now looking long, full, and healthy again. No more bald spots. No more panic.

If you’re experiencing postpartum hair loss or any kind of thinning, PRP is absolutely worth considering. It’s not magic, but it is science, and in my case, it helped tremendously. You can book an appointment in Kona.

Thank you, PA Victoria. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to dig up some before and after pictures.
