Acne Scar Treatment with Fractional CO2 LaserBy Patricia Achay, PA-C
Acne scars can be embarrassing, frustrating and challenging to treat. There are several types of acne scars: the most common on the face are atrophic scars such as boxcar, icepick or rolling scars. These scars tend to be depressed and give the skin a pitted, indented or wavy look.
Acne scars are the result of a forceful inflammatory response that results in loss of tissue as the collagen is destroyed. The overlying skin collapses in leaving a saucer-shaped depression. Additionally, as we age we start to lose collagen and these scars become more pronounced.
Fortunately, new research has proven the effectiveness of using laser resurfacing to safely and successfully treat these bothersome scars. One of the most successful new treatments for facial acne scars is the fractional CO2 laser. This laser treats a “fraction” or column of the affected skin, ablating a portion of the scar while leaving an area of untreated skin. The area of untreated skin helps in the healing process and minimizes the chances of prolonged healing times with serious adverse effects. Scar tissue is ablated and fresh new skin replaces it. The appearance of acne scars will continue to improve for up to six months after treatment. Not only is the scar tissue ablated but also dermal collagen is stimulated which helps tighten the skin and reduces the visibility of the scar.
Downtime for the CO2 laser is about one week and 2-3 treatments may be necessary, done every 3-6 months, to achieve the desired outcome.
