Skin Cancer Spot It Early, Stop It Early

Skin Cancer 1 in 5 diagnosedSkin cancer is the most common of all cancers with over two million people diagnosed in the United States every year. Fortunately, it is also one of the easiest cancers to cure if diagnosed and treated early. However, if skin cancer goes untreated it can progress, resulting in severe disfigurement and even death. There are three main types of skin cancer and each has a different appearance. It is important to know the warning signs and to look for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt; skin cancer can be symptomless but dangerous at the same time. Warning signs to look for include:
  • A new skin lesion or growing lesion of any kind
  • A mole, birthmark, or any brown spot that changes in size, color, thickness or texture
  • A spot that newly appears after age 21
  • A spot that is painful, itches, bleeds, or is not healing
On average, one American dies every hour from melanoma.
