Wrinkle Relaxers: How Many Units Should You Use?

There are a few skincare topics that feel intimidating to the natural skin care girlies, but in reality, they’re one of the most studied and effective tools we have for softening fine lines and wrinkles in a very controlled, thoughtful way.

I am here to tell you the secret… If she is over 30, but doesn’t have any fine lines, it is a filter or it is relaxers.

My mom is 62. I’m 35. Same category of treatment, completely different goals. That’s the part people don’t always realize. Relaxers aren’t about making everyone look the same. They’re about understanding how your face moves and how those movements affect your skin over time.

Every time you raise your eyebrows, squint, frown, or smile, the muscles underneath your skin contract. Through the years of repeating these movements, the skin starts to crease. At first, those lines only show up when you’re making an expression. Eventually, they can linger even when your face is at rest. Neurotoxins work by gently relaxing specific muscles so the skin isn’t being folded over and over again. They don’t fill anything, they don’t stretch anything, and they don’t change your facial structure. They simply give certain muscles a break.

When that constant movement is reduced, fine lines soften, deeper lines look less etched in, and the skin has a chance to repair itself. For my mom, that means softening lines that have had decades to settle in. For me, it’s about preventing subtle lines from becoming permanent ones. Same treatment, completely different purpose.

Let’s look at the facial map comparing my mom and me because it tells the story better than words. At 62, her treatment plan focuses on areas where lines are already visible at rest. The goal is to soften and refresh without taking away expression. At 35, my plan is lighter and more preventative, targeting muscles that are just starting to leave a faint imprint on the skin. Neither of us looks frozen. Neither of us looks overdone. We just look well-rested.

My mom added the DAO muscles, which pull the corners of the mouth downward. Over time, strong DAO activity can contribute to a downturned or “sad” resting expression, even when you feel perfectly fine. Using small amounts of relaxer in this area helps counteract that downward pull, allowing the corners of the mouth to sit more neutrally or slightly lifted. It doesn’t create volume or change your smile but softens that heavy pull that can develop with age and muscle strength.

One of the biggest misconceptions about neurotoxins is that they’re only for people with deep wrinkles. In reality, timing matters. When lines are still subtle, small amounts can go a long way. That doesn’t mean everyone in their 20s needs them. It just means that when used thoughtfully, early intervention often means you need less over time.

Relaxers are the golden standard for softening fine lines and wrinkles. If you undertreat, the results won’t last as long, but you’ll look very natural. You can go the other direction too and be totally frozen, but most people land somewhere in between. The key is talking with your injector about your goals and your budget so you can build a plan that actually fits your face and your life. My own map changes all the time. I try something, see how it feels, and then adjust. That flexibility is part of what makes relaxers such a useful and customizable tool. Add an area and see if you like it. Anyways, we love a sale!
