ACS Relay for Life

Early July, LAVA105 Radio, the Coffee Talk Riders and Dr. Scheel partnered up at the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life walk to raise funds for skin cancer.    We feel this is an important and many times overlooked cancer that can leave scars and take lives.  Using radio ads and Facebook, we assembled 43 participants who walked through the night from 6pm to 6am at the Old Airport baseball fields. Several skin cancer survivors participated, including Dave Pratt who had just had surgery to remove a second melanoma from his chest only 3 days before the event.  He and his wife, Shirley from our office, matched Dr. Scheel’s donations and were there to show what early detection and treatment can do to save lives.  It was a night of fun, kids and dogs, face painting, pizza, tutus and laughter.   In the end, we raised over $5000 for skin cancer here on the Big Island! Many people don’t know this but the American Cancer Society will pay for flights to Oahu for skin cancer surgery!   Even though we have our own Moh’s/skin cancer surgeon that comes to our office from Beverly Hills, we still have more patients that need to go to Oahu for surgery.  We are grateful for this assistance for our patients!
