Kybella: Double Chin Got You Down?

By Dr. Monica Scheel
The American Society of Dermatology Surgery recently found that two-thirds of patients surveyed are bothered by excess fat under their chin, also known as a double chin. This is the same proportion of patients bothered by wrinkles around their eyes! Many of these patients bothered by a double chin are between 20 and 50 years old and more are men than women. Kybella is the first FDA-approved injection that contours the neck and permanently dissolves unwanted fat under the chin. The active ingredient in Kybella is an enzyme that occurs naturally in our gallbladder and aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When Kybella is injected under the chin, it dissolves the fat in that area. Once the fat is dissolved, it does not recur and retreatment is not expected unless additional weight is gained in the area. An average of three or four treatments done two months apart are usually required to achieve the desired result. More than 1600 patients were treated in the Kybella clinical trials and thousands have been treated with Kybella after it received FDA approval. In the clinical trials, 79% of patients treated with Kybella reported satisfaction with their face and chin. After treatment, patients reported improved self perception, feeling happier and younger. Patients also felt less embarrassed, less self-conscious and less heavy.Call our office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Scheel to learn more! Kybella consultations are $88 and the cost of one Kybella treatment averages $1200 to $1800. Prices vary based on the amount of fat that needs to be treated. Actual costs will be discussed during the consultation. Because most patients will need three treatments, we also offer a package of three treatments for women at $3000 and $4500 for men.
