North Hawaii Community Hospital Skin Screening

news015-nhch-screening-2In recognition of the month of May’s designation as Melanoma Month, Dr. Monica Scheel helped support North Hawaii Community Hospital’s (NHCH) 27th Annual North Hawaii Senior Health Fair, which took place in Waimea on Sunday, May 3rd, 2015. A variety of health screenings were offered to our seniors by nurses, physicians, and other health care providers in the greater Waimea area. Dr. Scheel’s physician assistants, Marné CarMichael Walsh and Patsy Colvin, along with other local physicians Dr. Michelle Shimizu, Dr. Maria Perlas, Dr. Lawrence Derbes, and Dr. Jeffrey Tolan, performed skin checks on 72 seniors. Three patients were diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, three patients with melanoma/dysplastic nevi, and 28 patients had precancerous lesions. Recommendations were reviewed with each patient and a copy of their skin check was given to them to take to their primary care physician. While the seniors waited for their turn, volunteers Julie McGuinness, Kahelelani Walsh, Mahealani Walsh, and Hokulani Walsh reviewed safe sun protection practices, the importance of wearing sunscreen and the ABCDE’s of melanoma!
